Renovated stone house, 3 mins from centre, private court & heated pool, sleeps 6
A fully renovated stone house, nestled in the small, medieval market town of Langeac, a 3 minute walk from the centre. In the foothills of the Massif Central, at the mouth of the stunning Allier gorge, Langeac boasts wonderful cafés, terrace bars, restaurants and locally sourced food shops, and is a launching-point for the many local adventure sports.
The ground floor is open-plan and airy, with bright decor, fitted kitchen, dining room and lounge. Soft furnishings, UK satellite TV and DVD/CD player add homely comforts. In the cooler months, the wood burning stove gives a cosy glow to enjoy with a warm drink or glass of wine.
The first floor has twin and double bedrooms, with full height window and balcony rail, and a shared bathroom (shower, bath and toilet). The second floor attic has been converted into a master suite, with bedroom, separate toilet, and bathroom with roll top bath. All-season duvets, bed linen and towels are supplied, and changed weekly.
The stone-walled, south-facing garden court is a peaceful hideaway, with a large patio, table, chairs and parasol and a 8x4m, 1.2m deep, heated swimming pool for spring through autumn. There is also an outside WC.
Langeac
The town centre, approximately 200 yards away, boasts a twice weekly street market (Tuesday and Thursday), restful cafes and great food. Supermarkets, 5 minutes by car or 20 minutes on foot, supplement the superb local shops. July has it's summer festivals, including "Les Belles Jours", when 18th century costumes fill the streets for dancing, camp fires, games, traditional food and drink and a torchlit parade to finish the weekend.
Locality
In summer, the forests, mountains and Allier river gorge burst with sporting opportunities, including the best white water rafting in France. Kayaks, canoes and mountain bikes can be rented locally, and guided trips and horse treks run all summer. A tourist train with spectacular views of the gorge runs south from Langeac station.
In the winter, cross country skiing can be found as near as Jax (a 20 minute drive), with grander slopes just over an hour away at Le Lioran and Super Besse. The nearby historic towns of Lavadieu, Blesle, Brioude and Le Puy en Velay offer year-round delights.
Arriving
Langeac is about 1 hour south of Clermont Ferrand by car, 7 hours from the channel ports of Le Havre and Dieppe and 8 hours from Calais. The nearest airport is Clermont Ferrand, served by KLM/Air France and Flybe from airports across the UK. Lyon airport (2.5 hours drive) has regular flights with easyJet, Ryanair and British Airways. Trains come to Clerrmont Ferrand from Pairs or to Le Puy via Lyon, and car hire is readily available.
