Le Pichet in Ariège, a cottage in Midi-Pyrénées: Le Pichet exterior

Mountain paradise ideal for outdoor activities. Superb walking

Please note: we offer a reduced price (available on enquiry) outside school holidays for couples requiring one bedroom only . Please also ask if you would like to see comments from our "livre d'or" as we never request reviews on the internet.

With its majestic peaks soaring to the Spanish border and the gentler beauty of its lower wooded valleys and slopes, the Haut-Couserans of the Ariege- Pyrenees remains one of France’s best-kept secrets- a little-discovered, unspoilt gem tucked seemingly far away from the stresses of modern-day life.

In the tiny hamlet of Miramont nestling above the beautiful Garbet Valley, beneath the proud ruins of Charlemagne’s Chateau du Mirabat with its commanding views towards the valleys of the Spanish frontier, a warm welcome awaits you at Le Pichet.

Built partly into the hillside, this lovingly renovated former barn retains many of its original features - the "pas de oiseaux" (for thatching), and the beams of the old roof structure. It benefits from superb light, and Rodney's sculptures and paintings (when not being exhibited elsewhere) and Eleri's embroideries provide a finishing personal and artistic touch.

The ground floor consists of a spacious dining room, bathroom and well-equipped kitchen; a lovely oak stairway leads to the first floor consisting of two charming bedrooms comfortably accommodating 5 people and a high-ceilinged living room, (where a further 2 can sleep, if wished, on the canapé gigogne). Both house and garden benefit from wonderful views over the mountains, and being west-facing, fabulous sunsets

Activities-walking in the area is quite simply superb, whatever your level; for keen cyclists we are in the middle of Le Tour's most formidable cols (although gentler options are also available and the roads are remarkably quiet); VTT/descent trails, canoe/kayak/rafting/fishing, and horse- riding in the lovely Garbet, Salat and Ustou Valleys, and of course ski-ing at the nearby resort of Guzet-Neige. Despite its unspoilt nature, the area is very accessible from Toulouse, Carcassonne and Lourdes airports; at 20k from St Girons it is within easy reach of the major road networks and the wealth of historic and cultural diversity of Ariege and Midi-Pyrenees in general (medieval Foix, Gallo-Roman St Lizier, the world famous Grottes de Lombrives - Niaux, the underground river of Labouiche, Tarascon's Parc de la Prehistoire, Cathar Castles.)

We also offer painting/sculpture tuition and full board painting holidays-please enquire for details. Pottery classes with a local teacher can also be arranged

Sheets/ towels are optional @£15/person/week, final cleaning £80.
Damage deposit - £250 is requested on arrival.
Euros also accepted.

It is impossible to do justice to the house and area in the photos shown here, so please do ask for others. We hope this will tempt you to visit this beautiful region and very much look forward to welcoming you!
