Characterful 2 bedroom stone house with spectacular unsurpassed views.
Right in the middle of the most celebrated part of the Dordogne, with some of the best views in the valley, Le Mirador is a perfect base for a really memorable holiday.
Walk through a vine-covered pergola and up a few stone steps to the covered terrace. From here you can look across the river to the valley beyond, over the walnut groves to Domme, or along the river a few hundred yards to La Roque Gageac. From this terrace you can enter the lounge or continue up more steps at the side of the house to an amazing private roof terrace. The views from here are really breathtaking. Enjoy a glass of wine while you take in the spectacular panorama of the whole valley with the beautiful bastide town of Domme in the distance.
The house has 2 bedrooms - the one on the ground floor has a large casement window overlooking the river and a king-sized bed. Even the shower room beside it looks over the Dordogne. A spiral staircase leads up to a spacious twin bedroom with exposed beams and an ensuite shower room. It too overlooks the valley. You can also access the roof-terrace at this level.
The kitchen is well-equipped with cooker, microwave, fridge-freezer, washing machine and dishwasher. You'll find dining furniture on both terraces and in the dining area of the lounge, and a barbecue on the roof terrace.
La Roque Gageac has been formally designated "one of the most beautiful villages in France". Clinging to the cliffs overlooking the Dordogne the village in its honey-coloured stone has evolved over hundreds of years to have a charm and personality of its own. Nestled between spectacular south-facing cliffs and the Dordogne, it enjoys a welcome micro-climate which lets bananas and bougainvillia thrive along the cobbled streets.
People have lived in this area for 40 000 years and evidence of the past is everywhere. From prehistoric cave dwellings to pretty villages with their stone lavoirs and bread ovens; from castles of the Hundred Years War, to the medieval and Renaissance buildings of Sarlat - historical sites abound. Five chateaux are within 3 miles of the house. Just over a mile away the medieval fortresses of Beynac and Castelnaud, facing each other across the river, once changed hands between warring French and English armies. Castelnaud has a fascinating museum of medieval warfare. Sarlat, with more listed buildings per square metre than any other town in Europe, is only 5 miles away. The beautiful bastide town of Domme is 3 miles from the house.
The food in the Dordogne is of course world renowned and the many nearby markets are filled with mouth-watering produce for anything you want to cook.
When you can tear yourself away from the terraces at Le Mirador, you'll find on your doorstep several excellent restaurants and terrace cafes, a boulangerie, beautiful walks, boat trips, tennis, canoe hire and lovely river beaches to swim from. What more could you want from a holiday?
