3½ en-suite bedrooms sleep 7, pool, river, tranquillity
You can visit Romanesque churches or Burgundian Châteaux, taste wines, walk, fish, ride or think. Though the Manoir and its park are in the centre of a tiny village, with a surrounding wall and rivers, it's very private. There is just a small charcuterie in our village, but the bread van calls each morning, there's a small café/restaurant in each of the two adjacent villages (2kms) and several supermarkets and restaurants in our local town, Chatillon sur Seine (12kms) which also has a lovely Romanesque church, an excellent museum and tennis courts. Other places to visit include the renowned Fontenay Abbey, Vezelay, Troyes and the champagne vineyards near Bar Sur Seine, or, further south, the illustrious Burgundian ones between Dijon and Beaune.
We've a 12 metre swimming pool, rivers, a rowing boat, wooded paths, and a huge lawn for croquet, badminton, football or cricket. Though the pool is shared with the dower house (La Vieille Maison) and the cottage, the two bigger houses each have their own terraces and lawn area and don't overlook each other. The cottage is in a courtyard behind the big houses. There's plenty of space for each house to be private, though we find that children tend to seek each other out to play together. Several three generation family groups have become regular visitors, as have people who take just one house. Perhaps the key words to describe Thoires are 'space' and 'tranquility'. It“s not grand, but for a peaceful holiday in an idyllic place, Thoires is excellent, though for its drawbacks, it might be as well to check the warning on the Vieille Maison page!
