One of three apartments in the converted grange and sleeps up to four persons
Caux is a quiet village centrally placed in the department of the Hérault. The scenery varies from the coastal plain with the mediterranean coast dotted with sandy beaches, modern marinas and traditional harbours, to the plateaux and gorges to the north and the mountains of the 'Parc Regional du Haut Languedoc' to the west.
Built on a rise at the head of a shallow valley, the village, with its medieval core and imposing church tower, dominates the surrounding rolling landscape of vineyards and olive groves.
Here in Caux we have a small grocery shop, a greengrocer, 2 bars ,2 boulangeries, 2 tabacs, 2 hairdressers, 2 butchers, a pharmacy and a post office. Friday is market day when stalls selling locally grown produce take over in the 'Place de la Republic'.
Many vignerons in the village sell their wine directly to the locals and we certainly recommend a tasting.
PLACES OF INTEREST IN THE AREA :-
The medieval town of Pézenas is 7 km to the south with its bars, excellent restaurants and craft shops in the old town and is famous for its historical connection with the writer Molière.
Béziers (25mins) with its central 'place' lined with restaurants whose tables extend under the shade of the large plane trees.
Lac du Salagou for fishing and water sports.
River Hérault for canoeing and swimming.
and 30 mins away the mediterranean coast with a choice of several fine sandy beaches.
THE ACCOMMODATION :-
There are three apartments in the converted grange, all directly off the south facing, walled, cobbled courtyard adjacent to the maison de maître.
The courtyard is equipped with terrace furniture and a built in BBQ for cooking those 'brochettes', 'rouget en papillote' ,'steak de taureau' or even humble 'bangers and burgers'. On a hot day the 3m diameter sand filtered plunge pool becomes the focus for cooling off after the beach or just to relax by. At just 65cm deep it is ideal for kids and also satisfying for mums and dads. External lighting comes on at dusk for those who wish to enjoy those balmy evenings sitting under the stars.
Across the 'cour' is a shared utility room with washing machine, iron etc.
APARTMENT THREE :-
Access is up an external stone staircase from courtyard level to a small terrace off which is the entrance door.
On entry, to the left, is an original latched door, leading into the main bedroom with canopied double bed. Further along is the second bedroom with full size bunk beds. Next the shower room with loo.
Through an arch is the living/dining/kitchen space with the kitchen along the wall to the right equipped with gas cooker (with oven), microwave, refrigerator, sink, and storage cupboards with crockery, pans, and cooking utensils. Gas is included.
The living/dining area has a settee, two armchairs, and a dining table and is lit by a large window overlooking the 'cour'.
Linen, bedding and towels are included. A cot, stairgate, and highchair are available on request.
