3 bedrooms, sleeps 5 with views of the gorges of Chouvigny and river Sioule
This 17th Century stone farmhouse with its original oak beams, two large volvic stone fireplaces with woodburners and tiled ground floor, is situated in a quiet hamlet overlooking the valley of the River Sioule and the gorges of Chouvigny. There are two twin bedded rooms and one single with ample wardrobe space. Two of the bedrooms are newly carpeted. The large bathrom with bath, shower, bidet, toilet and washbasin has recently been refurbished. The secluded walled garden and patio area, with barbeque, makes a great outdoor dining room for either breakfast or dinner on a warm summers evening. The dining room and sitting room both have volvic stone fireplaces with woodburners and are in the traditional style. The large kitchen is complete with all modern and necessary appliances. If you are looking for rest and relaxation, then this small hamlet, a short distance from the A71, at an altitude of 490 meters with beautiful views across forested and rolling hills, makes an ideal retreat. Local wildlife include deer, rabbits and hares, wild boar, red kites, buzzards and owls to name a few. There are some excellent walks in this rural location. Visit the cathedral town of Clermont Ferrand (50 kms), historic Vichy (40 kms) and Montlucon on the river Cher (39 kms) where there are excellent shops, cafes and restaurants. The Puy de Dome at 1465 meters has beautiful panoramic views from the summit and there is hang gliding from the top for those wishing to paraglide over the chain of extinct volcanoes. In 2012 a new funicular railway will open to take visitors to the top of the Puy. More information on these extinct volcanoes can be found at nearby Volcania. The old walled town of St. Pourcain sur Sioule is the centre for the local wine of this region. Local french markets at St. Eloy les Mines (9 kms) and Riom (35 kms) sell locally grown produce, crafts and of course very reasonably priced wines. A drive along the river Sioule will take you through the gorges of the Sioule and Chouvigny and a visit to Chateau Rocher and the old Roman bridge at Pont de Menat is well worth a visit. Or why not canoe down the river and through the gorges. For a more adventurous and memorable experience, try a balloon flight which, with favourable winds may take you along the gorges or towards the extinct volcanoes, depending on weather conditions.
