One hour's drive from Caen, 2-storey stonebuilt 200 year old house
Experience the true Normandy in a small hamlet about a mile from ancient Tinchebray which has traditional French shops as well as a large supermarket. A very quiet location but not isolated. The neighbours are all French and the helpful caretaker lives just down the road.
The ground floor of the cottage has a combined lounge, dining room and kitchen covering 400 sq ft in area. It has French doors to a patio with chairs and a table and a barbecue. Adjoining is a fenced grassed garden (1/6 acre) which has apple trees giving ample shade when necessary. There is a picnic table, and between two apple trees a hammock can be erected in order to enjoy the sun and relax. There is room for the parking of two cars.
In the kitchen there is an electric cooker, microwave, fridge/freezer and a washing machine. There is a tumble drier in the shed in the garden. All crockery, cutlery, cooking utensils, tea towels, etc. are provided. Hot water is provided by an electric immersion heater.
The lounge has a big settee, three easy chairs, a coffee table and a radio/CD player.
There is a long dining table which seats eight comfortably.
Also on the ground floor is a shower room with a wash basin, and a bathroom with washbasin and lavatory.
On the first floor there are three bedrooms. One has twin beds, a wardrobe and chest of drawers. The second has a single bed and chest of drawers, and the third has a large double bed 6 ft wide and a single bed. This room has a wardrobe and a chest of drawers together with a table and chairs. On the landing is more hanging space.
On this floor there is a toilet and washbasin.
Also provided is an iron and board, hair dryer, high chair, travel cot and potty.
The house is within easy driving distance of historic towns such as Domfront and Lonlay l'Abbaye. A slightly longer drive will take you to Mont St Michel, Granville, Bayeux, Villedieu-les-Poeles and the Normandy beaches. Good swimming beaches near Granville is about an hour and a quarter's drive away.
Good markets abound, notably Flers and Sourdeval. Have lunch in Sourdeval and listen to the farmers talking!
There is a very good typically Norman restaurant in Tinchebray. Have lunch there and eat with the locals. If you want something more sophisticated, there are good restaurants in Vire (about 10 miles away) and Domfront (about 7 miles).
Horse trotting races are a feature of the locality and there are regular fixtures throughout the season.
There are two zoos within easy driving distance, and also a place called 'La Village Enchante' where the whole family can spend a very happy day with a picnic (little boats, roller skating rink, bouncy castles, small farm, ride on little train, high wires and tree walks).
Horse riding is available nearby, and golf courses are within easy reach. Cycling is a joy on the quiet roads. There are two bicycles provided.
Bed linen and electricity are included in the price.
