THE MEDIEVAL VILLAGE of Belvès, officially designated "l'un des plus beaux villages de France", is situated in Périgord Noir, the most picturesque part of the Dordogne. Belvès is a bastide village which belonged to the English Crown in the thirteenth century, & it is rich in history, with many fine buildings dating from the eleventh century, & a magnificent fifteenth century market hall. This area of the Dordogne is littered with historic & picturesque places: the show-piece bastides of Monpazier & Domme are nearby, as is world-heritage town Sarlat & the magnificent villages of Beynac, la Roque-Gageac and Limeuil. On this stretch of the river you will find some of the finest villages, castles & chateaux in France.
